GSN Ratings Sunday 10/9 for 'Family Feud' and 'Scare Tactics' versus 2nd Presidential Debate

Source: ProgrammingInsider (Douglas Pucci)

GSN competed directly with the Second Presidential Debate. Ratings from the First Presidential Debate on Sunday, September 26th were negative on GSN versus tough competition. The debate ran from 9-10:30pm ET.

Summary: From lead-in Family Feud at 8:30pm, which had slightly below average ratings compared to its typical Sunday primetime numbers, Scare Tactics dropped 66% in total viewers and 60% in 18-49 viewers. Scare Tactics continued to drop at 9:30pm, 10pm and 10:30pm.

Even before the weekend of October 8th/9th and before these ratings were known, this Sunday night 2-hour Scare Tactics block was only expected to be a one week change. This coming Sunday, October 16th, Family Feud will air from 6pm-12am and other Sundays forward.

The below ratings were also part of a week where GSN suffered its worst primetime/total day weekly average in over two years.

GSN primetime ratings for Sunday, October 9th (All Times ET):
8:00pm Family Feud: 405,000 total viewers/90,000 18-49 viewers
8:30pm Family Feud: 435,000 total viewers/127,000 18-49 viewers
9:00pm Scare Tactics: 148,000 total viewers/51,000 18-49 viewers
9:30pm Scare Tactics: 101,000 total viewers/42,000 18-49 viewers
10:00pm Scare Tactics: 90,000 total viewers/38,000 18-49 viewers
10:30pm Scare Tactics: 77,000 total viewers/35,000 18-49 viewers

Primetime average: 209,000 total viewers and 64,000 18-49 viewers

Percentage of viewers under 50 years of age (and approximate median viewer age):
8:00pm Family Feud: 22.2% (68 years old)
8:30pm Family Feud: 29.2% (61 years old)
9:00pm Scare Tactics: 34.4% (53 years old)
9:30pm Scare Tactics: 41.2% (44 years old)
10:00pm Scare Tactics: 42.2% (44 years old)
10:30pm Scare Tactics: 45.4% (40 years old)

  1. These Scare Tactics numbers look like the godawful ratings for the Hellevator rerun marathon on September 30. Both shows will soon be gone from GSN forever.

    1. "Both shows will soon be gone from GSN forever."

After the week of October 24-30 for sure (at this point). The week of October 31st schedule will be interesting to see what fills in the gaps, particularly Friday night, between Hellevator and Window Warriors. Of course mostly Harvey Feud, but would not be shocked to see some Skin Wars: Fresh Paint to come back, or more Idiotest and/or The Newlywed Game slots.

    2. I think Scare Tactics is doing even worse than the DWTS reruns GSN had years ago. Note to GSN, stop acquiring non game shows. Since you mentioned Skin Wars Fresh Paint, there hasn't been a renewal for the show or Skin Wars as well. I'm wondering if the SW franchise is going down the road of American Bible Challenge. Starting off hot, then slowly die off. I think Window Warriors will still bomb. It doesn't really have a compatable lead in and the premise is just stupid.

With Wheel Of Fortune returning to GSN, I looked at my guide and it is indeed from the 2013-2014 season. That's really recent even for 11 am. But I guess SONY won't let the show air in primetime. If they do well, I can see Wheel replacing either Karn or O Hurley Feud. I really wish Lingo was still on the schedule. It could have aired in the afternoon maybe after Chain Reaction or it replaces the abused to death 2012 Pyramid. Or maybe even air Lingo at 11 am and then Wheel at 11:30 am.
