Following poor ratings, GSN needs changes in primetime and daytime NOW

For Skin Wars to have a successful third
season in ratings, new runs of the show
need an earlier timeslot with a Family
Feud lead-in as soon as possible.
See below
GSN: The "late night" originals are not working.

For their respective third seasons, GSN has decided to launch new episodes of Skin Wars and Idiotest in the 10pm ET hour, which has turned out not so hot. 10pm ET on the East Coast, where most of the population lives, is simply too late in the evening. Meanwhile, 9pm CT, 8pm MT and 7pm PT just do not appear to be clicking for GSN viewers in those time zones.
The $100,000 Pyramid would be the BEST
replacement for The $25,000 Pyramid, if the
current lease does expire in May (see below).

Same night, same lead-in, new timeslot for Idiotest

In two weeks now, Idiotest has averaged 337,000 total viewers and 96,000 18-49 viewers, which is down 5% in total viewers and also down 35% in 18-49 viewers from the first two weeks of Season 2 (April 1 & 8, 2015 at 8 & 8:30pm ET).

Idiotest is suppose to be a family show. It should be on earlier in the evening. Since GSN is adding Family Feud to each weeknight at 8pm and 8:30pm starting next week, this is what I would recommend for Tuesday nights:

8:00pm: Family Feud
8:30pm: Family Feud
9:00pm: Idiotest (new)
9:30pm: Idiotest (new)
10:00pm: Family Feud

Looking at the general decline of Idiotest over its second season scheduled in the format at two-a-week, it may be time for Idiotest to get scheduled in a daily slot, similar to how shows like The Newlywed Game, Baggage and The Pyramid were around 4 to 6 years ago (However, not that early in the evening). A good Idiotest slot would be each Monday-Friday at 8:30pm ET, with Feud at 8pm, then back to Feud at 9pm.

Same night, different lead-in and earlier timeslot for Skin Wars

Skin Wars is suppose to be a show that has ratings above the GSN average. Wednesday's Skin Wars season premiere contained just an ordinary GSN number. I blame the timeslot, but I also blame the lead-in. GSN should always lead in new originals with one and only one show: Steve Harvey Family Feud. Here is how I would change Skin Wars as soon as possible on Wednesday nights:

8:00pm: Family Feud
8:30pm: Family Feud
9:00pm: Skin Wars (new)
10:00pm: Family Feud

GSN should forget about having a Skin Wars rerun as lead-in, which was very poorly rated throughout Season 2, and just do Family Feud. GSN should also forget about Idiotest new runs and reruns as lead out to Skin Wars, and just do Family Feud (then do Idiotest later).

Changes needed in daytime

GSN total day ratings have been slipping while primetime has been consistently strong. The April 11-17 total day average was 298,000 total viewers, which was the lowest rated week in total viewers since October 12-18, 2015. GSN's total day averages have been on a downward slide since the start of this year. Take a look:

January 2016 (5 weeks): 362K
February 2016 (4 weeks): 344K (-5%)
March 2016 (4 weeks): 324K (-6%)
April 2016 (3 weeks so far): 312K (-4%)

Here is where I believe daytime needs changes...and soon:
8:00am: Match Game
8:30am: Match Game
9:00am: Card Sharks
9:30am: Press Your Luck
10:00am: Card Sharks
10:30am: The $100,000 Pyramid (once 25K Pyramid lease likely expires in May)
11:00am: Lingo (Woolery) or Super Password
11:30am: Lingo (Woolery) or Super Password
12:00pm: Family Feud (Harvey)
12:30pm: Family Feud (Harvey)
1:00pm: Deal or No Deal (NBC)
2:00pm: Catch 21
2:30pm: Catch 21
3:00pm: Chain Reaction (Lane)
3:30pm: Chain Reaction (Lane)
4:00pm: Deal or No Deal (NBC)
5:00pm: Family Feud (O'Hurley)
5:30pm: Family Feud (O'Hurley)

  1. Truth be told, new-to-GSN episodes of The $25,000 Pyramid would be a welcome sight to GSN's schedule - especially when 1984 is the only untapped year remaining to be aired.

As for the remaining classics, some of the shows are well into their third cycle now (Press Your Luck is currently in the fourth cycle, and Eubanks' Card Sharks is likely to start a fourth cycle later in May), and there's only so much the viewers can handle.

I was off from work yesterday (provincial holiday), and I had no desire to watch GSN (except for The $25,000 Pyramid, which is in its third cycle). That said, I think we're due for different (episodes of) classics sooner or later.

  2. What about Richard Dawson family feud?

    1. Although a nice suggestion, GSN has overloaded their schedule enough with the Harvey version, I doubt they will want to add any more Family Feud to the schedule.
