'The Chase' may succeed on Fridays

Last week, GSN announced through on-air advertisements new episodes of The Chase will resume in November, but on an unusual night. In the different night scheduling era GSN has been in since November 2011, the only three nights GSN has aired new originals have been Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. GSN has never tried new originals on Friday nights.

Everybody has been pinning GSN for putting The Chase in the "Friday night death slot". I think The Chase will succeed on Friday nights. There is much less competition on Fridays than Thursdays (or any other night Sunday-Thursday). Broadcast television airs mainly reruns and lower rated shows on Friday nights while there is not the NFL to compete with on Fridays (there is on Thursday). I see an opening for The Chase on Fridays. Additionally, there is never really a weak night for GSN. GSN's weakest nights are when there is big competition. There is not big competition on Fridays.

The Chase will be fine. I do not see powerful total viewers numbers anywhere close to a million, but over its five week Friday night run I see episodes averaging between 450,000 and 600,000 total viewers. Why lower than normal? Because GSN has pushed The Chase aside recently for their other programming. Social media accounts for The Chase too have been dead, so that does not help. Still, The Chase will have general success on Fridays.

  1. I don't see the big deal about the show moving to Fridays. There is only 5 episodes left and it will be done quickly in December. I wonder if the show will have Black Friday off seeing how that day is part of thanksgiving weekend. It's a good time because it will be nighttime outside by 5 or 6 pm. Also, like what the post said, less competition on Fridays. Maybe the only thing they'll run into is The Amazing Race on CBS, but that show doesn't put up high ratings like it used to in its heyday. The Chase should perform well on Fridays.
