Let's Talk Ratings! (September 2-8)

Here are most of the low lights for the first week of September, courtesy of SonoftheBronx:

215MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Mon10:00AM-11:00AM600.1155

The marathon did not do so well. Unless its a pre-1990's marathon, I've always thought GSN should kick-off the morning with Match Game and start the marathon at 9am Eastern. The whole Ohno marathon averaged a very poor 189,000 viewers. If anything, a 5th Grader marathon would have suited much better.

Password Plus may not be long for the schedule. Whammy! does significantly better a half-hour later, so it's not just the whole weekend morning time frame. For the 9am slot, I'd suggest Match Game or, hate to say more of it, Karn Feud.

Sunday afternoons are really hurting with NFL Football. I haven't seen numbers this low since the last year with the NFL season. That 3pm hour is really an ouch. Not quite sure what else could fill these hours but something should be done.

GSN must have reacted to these, not waited another day and decided to air the three-hour Harvey block starting September 12th, not waiting until the next Monday even. The Wednesday and Thursday numbers were much better though, 4 of 8 Karn/O'Hurley slots above 350,000 viewers.

Minute to Win It (Ohno) did not prove too well this week either. All reruns averaged 229,000 viewers, therefore only one rerun saw above 300,000 viewers, barely.

The Chase in its last week scattered around the schedule saw its reruns at a 249,000 viewership average. Not one rerun was above 300,000 viewers.

Lastly, Super Password managed to achieve much better numbers by morning standards in its new(er) slots than at 11am:

  1. The Minute marathon was a waste. I didn't even watch GSN that day because of it. I wouldn't be surprised to see it gone by the end of the year.

If Password Plus leaves, I'd put something like Press Your Luck or Woolery Lingo in that slot.

The NFL and NASCAR are easily weakening Sunday ratings, but Sunday is pretty much a dry schedule, so I wouldn't worry about it.

    1. MTWI marathons have been a waste. The THREE Fieri ones (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Memorial Day) bombed out except a few isolated good numbers. Ohno took an even worse hit on Labor Day.

According to the press release from March, GSN acquired 66 episodes of P+ but only 44 have been seen to my record, since the end of April. I wonder if the Kennedy episodes will stick around or if GSN will axe them mid-lease.

    2. Hopefully this was the last Minute marathon GSN does. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's will hopefully be something different.

I think Password Plus will stick around until next April, then be replaced by Press Your Luck or Woolery Lingo, or acquire something else for that slot like Child's Play or, this may be out on a limb, but reacquire Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune.

    3. GSN still has Jeopardy! acquired, the 2008-09 season to be exact. I've heard the lease runs through May 2016 several different times.

J! was just pulled from the schedule due to meh midday ratings. I reported months ago on this blog that its been banished until 2014.
