Let's Talk Primetime!

For the week of September 16-22, the latest published week for ratings, GSN's primetime average was the lowest since the week of June 17th, 2013 (314K now versus 309K then). Here is the night-by-night breakdown:

Monday: Family Feud (Karn/O'Hurley):
128FAMILY FEUDMon7:00PM- 7:30PM300.2257
152FAMILY FEUDMon7:30PM- 8:00PM300.2232
97FAMILY FEUDMon8:00PM- 8:30PM300.2284
191FAMILY FEUDMon8:30PM- 9:00PM300.1202
224FAMILY FEUDMon9:00PM- 9:30PM300.1163
211FAMILY FEUDMon9:30PM-10:00PM300.1179
196FAMILY FEUDMon10:00PM-10:30PM300.2193
202FAMILY FEUDMon10:30PM-11:00PM300.1188

A very poor performance for Richard Karn (7-8pm; 10-11pm) and John O'Hurley (8-10pm) Family Feud. The whole night, err, block averaged 213,000 viewers. This is way down from the three previous weeks, 411K (8/26), 355K (9/2) and 301K (9/9).

When the network competition heats up for the Fall, things can go South for cable reruns. Plus Dancing with the Stars (which premiered that night) and The Voice have always hurt GSN, while when Dancing and Voice do not air (Winter, Summer), Feud on Monday does much better.

Solution: What GSN has always loved on Sundays since November 2011, to Mondays: 5th Grader. A re-acquisition or maybe the half-hour version would work better, being the fact that it's a half-hour show.

Tuesday: Minute to Win It (Ohno)/The Chase:
196MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Tue7:00PM- 8:00PM600.1193
69MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Tue8:00PM- 9:00PM600.2336
54THE CHASE                                        Tue9:00PM-10:00PM600.2356
206MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Tue10:00PM-11:00PM600.1185
130MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Tue11:00PM-12:00AM600.2255

Glad this is getting fixed effective this Tuesday (10/1). The only two hours that did decent were 8pm and 9pm, which is the way it was all Summer. I'm glad to see The Chase rerunning well, even though it's only once a week.

Solution: Minute (New) at 8pm, rerun at 11pm, The Chase at 9pm, Harvey Feud at 7 & 10pm. In other words, what's actually happening soon. Come November, a double-run of The Chase. Two new runs at 8pm and 9pm first, then a rerun at 8pm and a new run at 9pm.

Wednesday: Family Feud (Harvey):
48FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed7:00PM- 7:30PM300.2361
20FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed7:30PM- 8:00PM300.3410
38FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed8:00PM- 8:30PM300.3373
29FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed8:30PM- 9:00PM300.3388
4FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed9:00PM- 9:30PM300.4511
1FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed9:30PM-10:00PM300.4598
3FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed10:00PM-10:30PM300.3518
2FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Wed10:30PM-11:00PM300.4522

These numbers are all great, but not spectacular, even down to prior weeks: 543K (8/14); 440K (8/21); 481K (8/28); 460K (9/4); 449K (9/11); 460K (9/18). Going back four to six months, numbers were usually better.

Solution: Acquire 2012-13 Feud as soon as earthly possible, which won't be until Mid-March 2014.

Thursday: Newlywed Game/Family Feud (Harvey):
84FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Thu7:00PM- 7:30PM300.2303
80FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Thu7:30PM- 8:00PM300.2311
83NEWLYWED GAME (GSN)Thu8:00PM- 8:30PM300.2304
104NEWLYWED GAME (GSN)Thu8:30PM- 9:00PM300.2278
18NEWLYWED GAME (GSN)Thu9:00PM- 9:30PM300.3412
10NEWLYWED GAME (GSN)Thu9:30PM-10:00PM300.3444
42FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Thu10:00PM-10:30PM300.2368
24FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Thu10:30PM-11:00PM300.3400

No complaints really about Thursdays. Newlywed Game had a sort-of rough hour at 8pm but not bad numbers for a primetime night that is almost not advertised at all. The Newlywed Game averaged 360,000 viewers while Steve Harvey Feud in the 7pm and 10pm hours averaged 346,000 viewers.

Friday: Baggage/Minute to Win It (Ohno):
196BAGGAGEFri7:00PM- 7:30PM300.1193
208BAGGAGEFri7:30PM- 8:00PM300.1183
191BAGGAGEFri8:00PM- 8:30PM300.2202
181BAGGAGEFri8:30PM- 9:00PM300.2210

106MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Fri10:00PM-11:00PM600.2274

Not horriffic but nothing great. Baggage takes over from 7pm-11pm effective October 4th.

Solution: Same as Mondays. Acquire something new.

Saturday: Family Feud (Harvey)/Minute to Win It (Ohno):
13FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat6:00PM- 6:30PM300.3432
6FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat6:30PM- 7:00PM300.3465
17FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat7:00PM- 7:30PM300.3413
21FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat7:30PM- 8:00PM300.2409
129MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Sat8:00PM- 9:00PM600.1256
139MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Sat9:00PM-10:00PM600.1242
66FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat10:00PM-10:30PM300.2341
28FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat10:30PM-11:00PM300.3389
61FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat11:00PM-11:30PM300.2345
67FAMILY FEUD (HARVEY)Sat11:30PM-12:00AM300.2339

We know which show really drops here from the averages. 6-8pm Feud averaged 428,000 viewers, Minute to Win It averaged 249,000 viewers and 10pm-12am Feud averaged 354,000 viewers. Not a strong primetime presence without more Family Feud.

Solution: Minute to Win It (Ohno) OUT. O'Hurley (8pm hour) and Karn (9pm hour) IN.

Sunday: Minute to Win It (Ohno):
136MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Sun6:00PM- 7:00PM600.2243
143MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Sun7:00PM- 8:00PM600.2240
62MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Sun8:00PM- 9:00PM600.2344
84MINUTE TO WIN IT (OHNO)Sun9:00PM-10:00PM600.2303

The whole 6-10pm block averaged 283,000 viewers. Some of the 5th Grader audience must have tuned-in, but a lot tuned out with disappointment. From 8-10pm, Minute averaged 324,000 viewers, where 5th Grader averaged 424K (8/25), 390K (9/1), 417K (9/8), 390K (9/15). Whenever 5th Grader was in primetime, the show would raise the primetime and network viewer averaged.

Solution: 5th Grader. Or, Syndie Millionaire. Or, Wheel of Fortune. Big acquisitions needed. Even Cash Cab, on a smaller scale, could work.

In the end: Mondays and Fridays need complicated work, where GSN needs to figure what can compete against Dancing with the Stars and The Voice, while whatever audience they can get for death-slot Friday nights. For Tuesdays, the solution is happening with the schedule effective October 1st. Saturdays just needs an Ohno Minute reduction, Sunday is eventually going to need something else, while Wednesdays and Thursdays are as perfect as can be.

All Times Eastern.

  1. Here's what I would do to primetime:

Monday: I agree with you, 5th Grader needs to return, don't know why GSN got rid of it.

Tuesday: Leave it as is, for the rest of October, then a change when The Chase season 2 starts.

Wednesday: Leave it as is. On March 14, 2014, Casey Abell will get new pdf's showing 12-13 Feud on Wednesdays.

Thursdays: Leave it as is, for now, even though I don't like Steve or Sherri. I won't watch Thursdays until The American Bible Challenge season 3 starts.

Fridays: I personally would like to see Flashback Fridays return there, if that can't happen, then acquire Syndie 5th Grader, Syndie Millionaire, Cash Cab, or even put Lingo on Friday nights.

Saturdays: I agree with you, even if it means a little more Feud, Minute needs a rest.

Sundays: I agree with you, though for Wheel of Fortune, as much as I want to see it back on GSN (since Wheel is my all-time favorite game show), if it can't air between 3pm and 1am, then how would it be eligible for Sunday nights?

  2. Wheel of Fortune can be shown Sunday nights on GSN since the current "New" runs do not air on the networks then.

Plus apparently the lease to 5th Grader expired after two years.
